First of all, how are you and your team doing in these COVID-19 times?
As a company during the current pandemic, we are doing well. Pre-Covid 19, although we had office headquarters, the team sometimes worked remotely so when the crisis hit the office-based workplace, we already had a head start to optimize our new routine. Due to our rapid ability to adapt, the quantity of our work produced actually increased and we were able to maintain our usual standard of excellence. Once the restrictions have eased, we are all looking forward to returning to our team-building events, coupled with the great social after-work life that makes Barcelona such an amazing place to do business.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded or joined this company?
Once I returned to the Isle of Wight I started to look for a job where I could gain some experience of working in an office where I could use my SEO skills. I was hired as an office manager in the SEO division of a digital marketing company in Southampton. After gaining valuable experience in this field, I quickly realized that my future career prospects were very limited to working for someone else. If I wanted to expand my horizons I had to strike out on my own and after doing a lot of research I made the move to Barcelona where I founded Minty Digital. The rest is history.
We have gone from strength to strength and our hard work and quality customer service was recently recognized when Minty Digital received a prestigious award in the field of SEO. We are really proud of this award and the recognition it has brought to Minty Digital. Winning this award included a full page of advertising in an airport magazine which promoted our services and has given us international exposure in the European business community. We are also now ranked the number one SEO company throughout Spain and receive outstanding reviews on leading review sites such as Clutch.
How does your company innovate?
We’ve got an interesting niche where we help companies from English-speaking countries to expand in Spain and Latin America. Alongside our standard SEO and Google Ads services, we have a lot of companies approach us for marketing services in both Spanish and English.
The whole team at Minty Digital continually bounces ideas off each other. We are different from a lot of other young companies, as we don’t have a hierarchy, New, often younger members of staff are all encouraged to contribute and add their input. We all work hard and team projects are discussed at every level so everyone feels involved.
Sometimes it doesn’t even feel like work as everyone looks forward to the next new day with the challenges and rewards that day brings. The whole Minty Digital ethos encompasses making use of all new technology and developing new programs which give us a fresh perspective and a head start on our competitors.
Minty Digital (Barcelona) is ranked as the number one S.E.O, agency in Spain and the UK on leading review sites such as Clutch. I would say that’s quite a good result for our first 3 years.
How the coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
At first, we lost about 40% of our business almost overnight! It was quite a lot of hard work to get back up to speed. After tireless nights and a relentless rebuild of our strategy, we decided to streamline some of our services where we were not as effective or productive. The decision was made to focus on our strengths and core service offers – SEO and Google Ads. Since we’ve made this switch With this change in focus and direction our business has recovered quickly and we have almost doubled our revenue and staffing levels.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Yes, I’ve had to make some difficult decisions, and streamlining our services meant that I had to lose some members of the team. It was tough making these decisions and it was definitely a learning curve. But you learn, move on, and focus on what is working for your company.
What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?
We use a number of tools including:
- Asana – great for remote project management
- Harvest – for keeping on top of client hours and expenses
- Charlie HR – holiday tracking, WFH days, and general team HR management
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Our competitors are many and varied, We even have other companies copy our business model. We don’t compete on a price level. Other companies are offering the same service, maybe a little less costly, but here at Minty Digital, we offer a premium, quality service at a very reasonable price and customer service is at the forefront of Minty Digital.
