Today we have selected Ben Young to take his interview. He is the Director of Digital Media Team.
First of all, how are you and your team doing in these COVID-19 times?
We’re very lucky to be working in an industry that benefited from the pandemic. Fortunately for us, the lockdowns and the following shift to an online world helped us greatly in new business. We’ve more than trebled our agency in the past 18 months. Naturally, the pandemic led to challenges, including shifting our staff into working fully remotely and then bringing them back into a more hybrid, flexible approach. Still, our staff and clients have both handled the transition incredibly well.
We’re also thriving at the moment in terms of staff. Over the past year, we’ve opened up a range of new services, including Shopify web design and development and Amazon marketing services. This allows us to offer our eCommerce clients a full digital toolkit, helping them implement a full-funnel marketing strategy online. In 2021 in a crowded market, this is crucial to success. We’ve also just launched an Academy, whereby we offer local young people the chance to enter the digital industry via apprenticeships. We’re massively excited to be able to help people to work. It’s a huge opportunity for all involved.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded or joined this company?
My background is in sales. I joined DMT many years ago when we focused on offering small businesses social media management – mainly estate agents and mortgage brokers. Luckily, we found a far more exciting niche in digital marketing for eCommerce! We soon settled into offering paid social and PPC, widening our services to provide email marketing and later web development. On a personal level, I’ve grown with the company, from Salesman to manager, right up to becoming a Director of the company. Today, a lot of my focus is on leading and inspiring the incredible team below me. To say I live and breathe DMT would be an understatement!
How does your company innovate?
Our company is innovative for many reasons. Firstly, we’re Facebook Business Partners and we’re situated outside of the capital. We offer our clients a premium agency experience without the London price tag. Our partnership with Facebook places us in the top 5% of agencies worldwide for our methodology and the results we achieve for our clients
In addition to our partnership with Facebook, we’re also Premium Google Partners and Platinum Klaviyo Partners, allowing us to offer an outstanding service to eCommerce brands across Google Advertising and email marketing. We’re also the only agency in the UK to use ROI Hunter – an intelligent marketing automation tool that large brands pay almost £300k per annum to use in-house. We open it up to smaller brands who wouldn’t usually afford this kind of tech by having access to this tool.
How the Coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
As mentioned above, the pandemic hasn’t affected us negatively really at all. We’ve had a couple of issues with people having to self-isolate, but again, this hasn’t been too much of an issue with our flexible approach to work. In terms of clients, once we reassured them in the very first instance that online demand would rise and keep their ad budgets high, things went very well for all involved – we started to see some record-breaking results.
Did you have to make difficult choices, and what are the lessons learned?
Fortunately, we didn’t have to furlough any staff due to working in the online sector. I suppose we decided to pivot our service offerings slightly as the pandemic began – on top of offering a pause on services to our current clients for anyone who was struggling. We also decided to offer a more affordable, streamlined service. This has allowed us to add on another revenue channel while opening our range of services to smaller brands that need a helping hand in the digital world.
What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?
As a digital agency, it’s unsurprising to hear that we have a fairly robust tech stack! Tightening up our processes and procedures regarding our online tools helped – specifically, we use Monday, HubSpot, Slack, and Google Workspace. Putting a solid workflow and systems across all of these tools has allowed us to make the shift to remote working with ease. I think it’s helped us solidify ourselves as a business overall – I can say hand on heart that we’re ready for anything that’s thrown at us.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
We’ve got many competitors on a local and national scale, but to be honest, none of them come close in terms of performance and service level across our core products – paid social, PPC, email marketing, and Shopify. We’ve built an amazing team full of highly proficient and passionate individuals, and our client loyalty reflects that level of service and performance offered.
Your final thoughts

The digital industry has been challenging over the past few months, thanks to iOS changes.
