Today we have selected Vlad Rascanu to take his interview. He is the Chief Executive Officer at Build Media Group.
First of all, how are you and your team doing in these COVID-19 times?
The agency continues to experience approximately 100% growth YOY as more companies are increasing their digital marketing budgets and delivering above industry average results for our clients.
Although the agency is growing steadily and doing very well, the employees are craving more social interactions and would prefer to come into an office once in a while. No one wants to come to the office every day, but everyone would enjoy coming to an office once or twice per week.
I’m hoping that shortly we’ll be able to feel safe to return to an office space. When writing this article, January 2022, the COVID situation is still not under control.
Tell us about you, your career, how you founded or joined this company?
I started my career in digital marketing in 2012 and never looked back. I fell in love with online marketing and with agency life. I worked at an agency for 2 years and then worked at Expedia.ca for 2 years, after which I decided to launch my agency. I sold that agency and took a break for almost a year before starting my next agency.
How does your company innovate?
We used to be an agency with a broader focus that serviced multiple industries. However, ever since we decided to niche down on the construction industry, we have innovated significantly more. We created our tech stack for home service businesses that we use, SOPs for running successful paid media campaigns on multiple channels, and a proven method that helps local businesses rank very well organically.
We got to a point where we can confidently promise at least a $1 Mil increase in revenue in the first year of working together with any home service business in a sizable market.
How the Coronavirus pandemic affects your business, and how are you coping?
It doesn’t impact it because we work with many SaaS businesses in the construction industry, real estate developers, and many home service businesses that provide essential services.
Did you have to make difficult choices and the lessons learned?
Building the right team and managing it successfully is one of the most difficult tasks. At times, the company outgrows some individuals, and tough decisions need to be made that are never pleasant. On the flip side, some employees also outgrow the agency and decide to leave it, leaving a big hole behind them that is not easy to fill.
I learned to hire based on personality and company fit over skillset. You can teach someone how to perform a task, but it isn’t easy to teach them how to think critically or manage their time properly.
What specific tools, software, and management skills are you using to navigate this crisis?
Slack, Asana, Google Meet, we sometimes also play different games as a team virtually.
Who are your competitors? And how do you plan to stay in the game?
Every online marketing agency out there could be considered a competitor.
Your final thoughts
I am very excited for our future as an agency, and I think we can continue doubling in team size and revenue every year for the next several years.
