Microsoft is creating a new large language model called MAI-1 that will be the rival of models of Google, Open AI, and Anthropic.
It is the first time Microsoft is developing a large language AI model since they are investing a huge amount of money in Open AI. For using Open AI’s models, they spent almost 10$ billion.
Now, they don’t need to depend anymore as their model might be as good as the one created by Google, Open AI, and Anthropic. This depicts the transformation of Microsoft. Before, they relied on the Open AI model, Chat GPT. The MAI-1 success solely depends on its developments and the performance of it relevant to old models.
Mustafa Suleyman is a former employee at Google and the CEO of Inflection. Now he is leading the development of MAI-1. The most of the Inflection’s team has been hired for $650 million in March.
Although some of the ideas and techniques might come from Inflection, it is declared that it would be the innovative big language model. This has already been confirmed by a Microsoft employee.
It is anticipated that MAI-1 will be much bigger than older models of Microsoft, like; Phi-3. It is said to have 500 billion parts, which means it needs more powerful computers and more information to learn from.
It is almost the same in the group as Chat GPT -4, which is even larger with more than 1 trillion parts. While the smaller models like Meta and Mistral have around 70 billion parts.
Microsoft is running two different AI models. One model is a language model that can run mobile devices, while the other type is a more advanced language model that needs the power of the internet in the form of a cloud.
It depicts that Microsoft is experimenting the AI on its own without depending on Open AI. Now, the technology of Open AI is assisting Microsoft, making its interesting AI feature just like the chatbot in Windows.
The actual purpose of the MAI-1 or how helpful it will be depends on the working performance. Microsoft is using group servers with Nvidia GPUs. They are gathering the training information from different platforms like from internet or tests generated by Chat GPT.
If the process goes smoothly, then Microsoft might show a glimpse of MAI-1 at its build developer conference at the end of this month.
But, it is still too early to declare that MAI-1 would be the major challenge to Google and Open AI. Although it represents a prominent step for Microsoft, if it is successful then it would be a game change, but the real result needs to be seen to conclude that.
